Our 5th/6th grade team took 2nd place in the Jingle Bell Tournament.

Philosophy and Environment

Before the season starts, the coaches of SYA try to assess each players abilities to help place the kids in the league that is appropriate for them. Our goal is to develop each player based on where they are at when they start. We promise to work with each child and try to help them improve their basketball skills. We also promise to provide an environment that teaches good sportsmanship and team work.

Below is information about the various leagues we provide opportunities in

Kinderball (In-House):

Introduction to Basketball for Kindergarten and 1st graders.  I allow pre-K if they are ready to play.  We practice Monday and Wednesday Nights at Truman from 6-7PM.  We don’t have official games, we try to play fun games with the kids to teach them the basics.  The season will start in the beginning of December and goes until end of February.

Kids keep their jersey (no jersey deposit)

NOTE:  I need volunteer(s) to help coach and assist the coach at this level.  You do not need to know everything there is about basketball.  At this level, it’s really about having fun with the kids and keeping their attention for an hour (sometimes very difficult).  The more volunteers the better.  We typically have about 20 kids at this level.

Truman (In-House):

A step up from Kinderball for 2nd and 3rd graders (co-ed).  I will allow more advanced 1st graders.  Skill level is for beginner players learning the game of basketball.  We continue to teach the basics of basketball and start to play games against each other.  We will put the kids on teams and select coaches and your kid will practice with his/her team.  Practices and games are Tuesday and Thursday nights at Truman from 6-7PM or 7-8PM.  We might add the 5-6PM slot if we have enough kids.  Season starts beginning of December and runs until beginning of March.  Open gym will start beginning of November which will provide more of a learning for the kids (before they join their teams).  Days and times TBD.

Girls Leagues (Saucon Valley Rec League)

3/4th grade and 5/6th grade divisions.  The biggest difference between 3/4th grade girls and in house is the girls will play against all girl teams, the basket is full height (In House plays on lower rims), games have referees so the rules are called a little tighter, and the skill level is slightly better (not too much difference though).  A total of 8 games are at Southern Lehigh Intermediate School on Saturday mornings.  Practice schedule TBD will be at high school or middle school.

Kids do NOT keep their jerseys (deposit is required- will not be deposited if jersey is returned)

Boys Travel Leagues (3rd-10th grade):

We play in three different leagues.  On Saturday October 27th, we will hold player evaluations to determine what league and what team your child will play on.  We will place your child on the team that fits his skill level and will provide him with the best opportunity to develop into a better basketball player.

Our tentative plan (as of now) is to have a team in the top League (LV League) for the following levels: 3/4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade.  We plan on putting the remaining teams into the JV league or the Saucon Valley Rec League based on skill level.  The JV League is very similar to LV League and the Saucon Valley League isn’t that far behind.  I may need coaches at these levels.

7/8th grade and 9/10th grade will be playing in the JV League.
