SYA Basketball Do’s & Don’ts for Harry S Truman

Do’s
1. Keep children properly supervised.  We are all visitors at Truman.  Parent & children’s behavior should be respectful, like you are visiting a friend’s house.
2. Clean up after yourself (or your children) – leave the area as clean or cleaner than when you arrived
    a. Put all trash in trashcans.
    b. Put chairs back when you leave.
3. Use restrooms in the Day Care area only.
4. Stay in the cafeteria area – not the halls, vestibule or other rooms.
5. Use good common sense judgment for any situations, activities or items not specifically covered in this list.
6. Activities (coloring books w/ washable crayons/markers, reading books, writing activities, small electronics games, small toys, etc.) approved by the school district and appropriate for the environment of a basketball game or practice is encouraged for siblings.

Don’ts
1. No running, bouncing/rolling/throwing balls, or horseplay in the cafeteria area.  While the flat, wide-open areas of the cafeteria is conducive to these activities, we are to treat the cafeteria area the same as you would if you were watching a game from the bleachers of the high school or middle school.
2. No playing or running at water fountains.
3. No skateboards, scooters, bikes, etc. in the school building.
4. No outside balls (of any kind) shall be brought into Truman.  SYA provides plenty of basketballs for the players.  We do not want any outside balls being brought into the building – they only lead to confusion on ownership (SYA or personal) & violation of “Don’ts” #1.
5. Arrive more than 15 minutes ahead of scheduled game/practice time.  Shift change overlap between teams should be minimized, as the idle time before the incoming teams start offers unnecessary time for mischief.

SYA Parent/Guardian Monitoring Program

1. Monitor Assignment – In place of the monitoring performed by custodians in previous years, parents/guardians of the players will be responsible for monitoring activities at Truman.  For the Truman League (2nd & 3rd graders) each team will be responsible to cover monitoring assignments for the (26) twenty-six game/practice timeslots from November through February.  For the Kinderball Program (Kindergarten and 1st graders) each group will be responsible to cover monitoring assignments for the (25) twenty-five timeslots each group will have from December through February.  Head coaches will be responsible to find parents/guardians to volunteer for “Monitor” duties for each time slot.  If a coach does not have enough volunteers, the coach shall have authority to assign “Monitor” duties.  Coaches shall consult with the League Coordinator, Bridget Eripret, or myself as needed.
2. Monitor Responsibilities –
    a. Ensure safety of all players & spectators, and preservation & protection of school property by enforcing the “Do’s & Don’ts”.
    b. “Monitors” shall use good judgment & be sure to gather all available facts before reprimanding anyone.  Monitors are responsible for their decisions, and Monitor’s decisions shall be enforced.
    c. If anyone refuses to cooperate or becomes confrontational, the “Monitor” shall inform a coach or custodian on duty to ask the person(s) to immediately leave the building for the remainder of the day.  The name of any person(s) asked to leave the building shall be reported to the Basketball Director that evening.
    d. If person(s) refuses to leave – call Salisbury Police (911) to have person(s) removed.  Report person’s name to Basketball Director.
    e. Penalties for Violations of “Do’s & Don’ts”
         i. 1st & 2nd Offenses the Same Day – Verbal warning & explanation of offense & subsequent penalties to child & parent/guardian.
ii. 3rd Offense the Same Day – Person(s) committing a 3rd offense the same day will be required to leave the building immediately for the remainder of the day.  Person’s name will be reported to Basketball Director.
iii. 2nd Expulsion From the Building – Person(s) being expelled from the building a 2nd time shall not be permitted to return for 1 week (7 days) fro the date of the 2nd expulsion.  Person’s name will be reported to Basketball Director.
iv. 3rd Expulsion From the Building – Person(s) being expelled from the building a 3rd time shall not be permitted to return for the remainder of the Basketball Season.  Person’s name will be reported to Basketball Director.
